PART ONE: SYNTAX (3M)
Question 1:
How many kinds of adverbs do adverbs ending in –ly belong to? Paraphrase the meaning of each type and give one example to illustrate.
(b) How do minor class words differ from major class words?
Question 2: Is each of the sentences in the following pairs different from the other in terms of verb type or structure? Explain.
(i) Jack left the room in a hurry.
(ii) Jack left his clothes in the closet.
(i) My sister makes a delicious fruitcake.
(ii) A fruitcake makes a fine gift.
Question 3: the sentences below are ambiguous. Read them carefully and do tasks (a) & (b) that follow.
The lamb is too hot to eat.
He watched the hunters with binoculars.
Paraphrase the different meanings that the sentences suggest.
Explain why the sentences are ambiguous. Use the diagrams where necessary.
PART TWO: SEMANTICS (3M)
Question 1: Compare the following terms. Give one example for each.
synonymy / homonymy
analytic sentence / contradictory sentence
Question 2: Identify the sense relation between the words in each of the following pairs.
cook / fry
send / receive
come / arrive
vehicle / car
Question 3: The following sentences make certain presuppositions. Identify them.
If only I had bought the house.
It came as a great shock to me.
Question 4: interpret the following sentence, and then identify the figure(s) of speech used.
Question 5: For the following utterance, provide two situations so that the utterance performs two different types of acts. Interpret the utterance in the light of the situations you provide, and then classify it according to the acts it performs.
“You are stepping on my toe.”
PART THREE: WRITING (4M)
Write an essay of about 250-300 words on either topic.
Topic 1: Give your comments on this opinion about the place of grammar teaching.
“The study of grammar is neither necessary nor sufficient
for learning to use a language.”
Topic 2: If you were teaching English pronunciation, what accent of the target language do you think should serve as a model? Should you use British? American? Others? Local accent? Or is it advisable to present mixed accents?
